Cybersecurity Laws Around the World

July 1, 2019Simeon Georgiev

Owing to an alarming situation created worldwide as a result of cybercrime activities, the legislative bodies globally have designed and implemented several laws to avoid cybersecurity incidents. These laws are aimed at preventing such crimes and punish criminals since ransomware removal and ransomware recovery after an attack cannot solve the related issues completely.

Most of the cybercrime laws around the world have been legislated just recently because it is high time for governments to do something against such abusive online activities. All the codes for different types of cybercrimes are different for all states and regions of the world. However, most of the laws are more or less similar in nature, especially in terms of the punishments granted.

Here is a summary of worldwide laws related to cybercriminals and their punishments once their illegal activates have been noted.

Laws Regarding Illegal Computer Access

Unlawfully accessing someone’s computer system is a crime with a lenient punishment in the majority of the countries. Such laws often order detention ranging from 6 months to 5 years to the criminal depending upon the seriousness and intensity of the illegal data usage. Moreover, illegally modifying a computer system can also get one detained for more than 5 to 10 years alongside a massive subtle imposition.

Laws Related To Telecommunication Theft

Hacking someone’s telecommunication services or data is considered a grave crime all around Europe and America as well as in other parts of the world. The most common punishment for committing such a crime is a hefty fine imposed alongside imprisonment for a considerable period, usually more than four years.

Laws Regarding Communications Interception

Mostly, such a crime is considered an extreme illegal act and is punished severely. The most common punishment all around the world is imprisonment, ranging from 2 to 6 years or even more. Mostly, hefty fines are imposed with or without ordering detention for the convict.  The most common crimes falling under this category include piracy, aggressive data’s distribution, and other such frauds.

Laws Regarding Phishing And Source Tampering

The criminal caught in these two ordinary cybercrime acts is not treated very well no matter what country it is. Usually, the phishers or people who alter the source code on any site or program are punished with a fine alongside imprisonment of 3 years and even more.

Laws For Regular Data Hacking And Harassment

Web harassers and criminals who illegally access someone else’s data through hacking a computer or any related device are likely to get detention for 3 or more years all around the globe. However, a few numbered states only impose heavy fines on such individuals and set them free once the fine has been paid.

Other than these few, there are so many laws already existing and even more being made every other day to save web users as much as possible. It is believed that the introduction of such legislative rules is necessary to stop the drastically increasing cyber crimes that are a threat to the future.
