Shortage of Resources Make Organizations Vulnerable Against Ransomware Attacks

April 23, 2018Simeon Georgiev

After the global outbreak of WannaCry ransomware last year, cyber security researchers have shifted their focus on this subject. Aspects like cost of ransomware damages, how well organizations are prepared against such attacks etc, are now being studied in depth.

In one such ransomware-related study, Ponemon institute has revealed some alarming facts regarding ransomware attacks. According to their findings, only 25 percent of the organizations (targeted by WannaCry) had the digital security in place that could detect any cryptovirological infection and only half of them were able to resist the attack.

So, of all the organizations hit by WannaCry, 87.5 percent of them were helpless following the attack and couldn’t do anything right away to prevent the encryption of data. Therefore, they had to commence professional ransomware removal activities to bring back the locked down data. Some of them also paid the perpetrators to restore ransomware files.

The institute has also questioned more than 200 senior cyber security executives to get an idea about how well they are prepared for ransomware attacks. It is found out that majority of them are familiar with the security details of only two ransomware strains (Petya, WannaCry), even though there are more than a dozen of cryptographic malware strains that target businesses.

Experts have furnished two reasons for the current abysmal landscape of organizational cyber security.

Rising Cost of Cyber Security Measures

Gone are the days when organizational digital security could be maintained by standard anti-virus programs. With evolution of cybercrimes at exponential pace, now multilayered and multifaceted cyber security routines are required to mitigate any cyber threat. Employing these extensive measures obviously requires a significant chunk of resources and organizations are currently not willing to spend such amount of money.

Dearth of Expert Cyber Security Staff

As it is mentioned above, the majority of cyber security personnel in organizations are not fully accustomed to the threat of ransomware. Hence, organizations are short of the staff that can develop a functional and pertinent cyber security plan ideal for deterring ransomware and other complex cyber attacks.
