Top Ransomware Attacks You Should Know About

May 5, 2019Simeon Georgiev

Since 2018, ransomware is deemed as one of the biggest and the worst possible threat to online businesses and to the individuals who are using the internet. In fact, this year in 2019, the whole situation is worse than ever and almost no one’s data is now secure and protected. The security researchers tracked somewhat around 11,000 ransomware variants this year and this figure is growing with the passage of time. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that our cybersecurity is now vulnerable to a whole new level and something needs to be done about these malware and the ransomware variants lurking on the internet to prey on the innocent businesses and individuals’.

Today we are going to list down the top ransomware attacks for you develop an understanding of what you should be on the lookout for. You should know about these viruses and attacks so that you can take timely precautionary measures to secure your data.

Dharma

Dharma first struck the world in 2016 and since then, there are a lot more versions of it, introduced in the cryptovirus market. This ransomware variant uses different codes and letter combinations to mark the encrypted files. An AES 256 algorithm is used by Dharma for the encryption of the files. And not only this, in fact, it also deleted the shadow copies of your files. With the help of Rakhni decryptor, you can easily get rid of the Dharma extension files.

LockerGoga

LockerGoga specifically hits the industrial market such as manufacturing firms etc. The worst part is that this malware can do both the things, it can demand ransomware and it can easily wipe off your data too. You can say that LockerGoga is the worst ransomware variant till date. When your PC gets infected with LockerGoga, you are literally logged out of all the systems and accounts. The only way to gain back the access is to pay the ransom!

SamSam

Over the past few years, SamSam has attacked a lot of industries in the US. Most importantly, SamSam has attacked a lot of major medical organizations, hospitals and even city municipalities. The SamSam attack is the worst of all because it demands a ransom which is really high. Like, a few years back, the Atlanta city was targeted by SamSam and the overall ransom paid was $17 million. Also, you should know that SamSam uses RDP to initiate the attack so you should always be careful with your Remote Desktop Protocol operations.

These are some of the top ransomware attacks that occurred in the past few years. No matter what the attack is, taking some precautionary measures is a must no matter who you are. Most importantly, if you think you have some valuable data that you cannot just risk to lose at all, then secure it and create a backup of it so that even if some ransomware variant attacks you, you still have the access to your precious data.
