Social Media Scams That Lead to Ransomware

December 2, 2019Simeon Georgiev

We are living in a time where using social media is everyone’s favorite hobby. Social media sites are the sole earning source for many and have made some people a celebrity overnight. All these benefits of social media, however, do not come without issues that make ransomware recovery a significant problem in the 21st century.

There has been a considerable increase in cyber scams through social media over the past few years, explaining the exceptional growth of companies providing cybersecurity services. By the end of 2018, there were about 3.23 billion active users on Facebook and Instagram, and at least one-third of them had to go through the pain of ransomware recovery due to their careless usage of these social media sites. Everyone is at the potential risk of being severely scammed through their social media profiles.

Here are the most emerging forms of social media scams that lead one towards a tiring ransomware recovery process afterward. These scams and their fast spread worldwide explain why one must try to avail of cybersecurity services that are within their reach or be aware of the frauds at the very least to avoid these as much as possible.

Faking or Hijacking a Real Profile

Cybercriminals find it very easy to make a fake social media profile using someone’s pictures and personal information of simply hijacking an original profile, changing its password so that the real user cannot log in. These scammers then contact the hijacked users or their friends, asking them for money or their details to benefit them. It is better to stay alert and contact the providers of cybersecurity services to remain safe as much as possible from such a scam.

Apps Asking Users To Take Quizzes And Tests

This is probably the most useful tactic for scammers. Every social media user likes to take tests or quizzes about what celebrity they resemble or what city they would go to next year. While this is not always the case, but sometimes these quizzes are designed to take personal information from you and spread malicious ransomware. Always be careful about who has developed such questionnaires and whether they are asking too much of your data and proceed accordingly.

Sending Messages About Lottery and Cash Prize Wins

Scammers on social media are likely to make a profile associated with any reputed organization or individual and endorse a lottery or give-away scheme through that profile. The users are sent a message saying that they have won a lottery or prize worth millions. Once the targeted individual shows interest in claiming the money, he is asked to submit his details, bank account details, and other such confidential information that is later used for scamming the individual. These scammers then threaten the scammed individual and ask them for money.
