Ransomware Strains Discovered During Last Week

May 23, 2018Simeon Georgiev

Development of ransomware is a very dynamic sector. Cryptovirological developers every day come up with some new variants and strains to trouble the security expert with their ransomware removal activities. Let’s have a look on some of the ransomware variants that surfaced in the cyberspace during last week.

CryptON Ransomware

Developed on the template of Nemesis ransomware, this cryptographic strain is aware of the activity of virtual machines. For ransomware removal, the operators of CryptON ask the affected user to purchase decrypter software from them.

RSAUtil Variant

RSAUtil ransomware has been around for months. Last week, security researchers discovered a new variant of the strain. Operators of RSAUtil warned the victims to not start any ransomware removal activity on their own. To make sure that transactions remain anonymous, they provide the address of their Bitcoin wallet for ransom payments.

Rapid Ransomware Has Also Made A Comeback

Rapid ransomware, which had been dormant for some time, has made its entry with a new variant as discovered by cybersecurity researchers. The activity of the third variant of rapid ransomware has been detected on the networks in different countries.

Sepsis Ransomware

A new ransomware strain has also been discovered by malware hunters during last week that goes with the name of Sepsis. Developers of this ransomware urge victims to contact them within 24 hours so that they don’t have to pay more for ransomware removal. They also warn the victims to not rename the encrypted files and to use any third-party software application for ransom removal. Researchers are trying to reverse engineer the algorithm of Sepsis’s cryptographic code.

A New Variant of Scarab Ransomware

A new strain of scarab ransomware has also been discovered last week by the team of hunters. The new variant is using the same encryption method to lock down the files on the infiltrated device. However, it appends the files name of encrypted files with the extension ‘JonnieWalker’, a famous brand of Scotch Whiskey.

This weekly addition of new variants and strains to the block is a clear manifestation that ransomware removal activities will remain central to the job of digital security experts.
