What is Cloud Storage & How Can it Help in Case of a Ransomware Attack

June 4, 2020Simeon Georgiev

Ransomware attacks are unarguably one of the biggest threats faced by all the big companies as well as individuals that have all their valuable professional and personal data stored on their devices. As victims are virtually left with no option, people are investing in professional ransomware removal programs to keep their data secure from intrusion.

While ransomware is undoubtedly a huge problem in today’s world, there is, however, one way to soften the blow of a ransomware situation. And that is through the mercy of cloud storage.

What is a cloud storage

Cloud storage is a unique way of storing data, unlike storing data through physical means like an external hard drive or USB. All your files are stored digitally on a cloud service. The host ensures that your data is well protected and is available anytime, anywhere you wish to access.

Benefits of cloud storage

Cloud storage has a list of benefits to offer over physical means of storage. So much so, the list is virtually endless. For starters, there is ample space for you to store all your valuable files. With different cloud services providing data storage of different sizes extending to tens of TBs, you always have enough space. No matter which service you opt for, you get free storage space to experience the benefits of cloud storage.

Moreover, there is no risk of losing data. With USBs or hard drives, there always exists a risk of losing. Similarly, physically backing up data is not only time consuming, but also highly prone to errors. The automatic upload feature regularly uploads your data to the cloud so that you can save the time of physically backing up data to invest it somewhere prominent. Moreover, with cloud storage, you have your data with you at all times, secure and sorted. And then, there are the benefits of ease, automatic uploads, sharing of files amongst users, to mention the few.

Perks of cloud storage in case of a ransomware attack

The best of the cloud storage perks has to do with its role in ransomware attacks. No matter how well ransomware removal programs protect your devices. Cybercriminals constantly come up with new tricks to lure you. In situations like these, it is better to be safe than sorry. Having cloud storage allows you to store a back up of your valuable data that you can access and restore in case of a ransomware attack.

Are cloud storage services ransomware-proof?

There is a rising concern over the safety of data stored in the servers of cloud storage. While it is highly unlikely for someone to infect a cloud service with a ransomware virus, keeping in mind the layers of digital security, these services keep the data under. It is still possible to tackle it. Services such as google, amazon, and others make use of a concept called versioning. According to which multiple versions of data are stored. So, if data in the cloud is infected, the data can be rolled back to the previous unaffected version.

Even if your cloud service gets infected, which is almost impossible, you still get to restore your files. This is not the case when it comes to storage options such as hard drive or USB, no matter how efficient your ransomware removal program is.
