How to Test Anti-Ransomware Tech

December 26, 2018Simeon Georgiev

Ransomware removal companies always love to claim that no one will keep you safe better than they can. You may also have noticed that they always add the usual impressive sounding words along the lines of ‘multi-layered protection’, ‘machine learning’ and ‘sophisticated behavior monitoring’. But the question here is – can they really deliver all that they claim to? Ransomware removal can, however, be put to the test with the help of ransomware simulators. These simulators use some real-world threats in order to compare anti-ransomware tools. Typically, the best anti-ransomware softwares will automatically detect the unique file signature of these real-world threats, and it won’t let it affect the files of your computer.

There are some limitations to the method of testing ransomware removal softwares. The most obvious among these is the fact that the simulator won’t be able to present the software with new and improved methods that cybercriminals tend to come up with from time to time.

The plus points of these simulators are quite enough to fulfill every small to medium sized business’s basic needs for cybersecurity. This is because any anti-ransomware software could be pitted against the most basic and simple threats out there in the form of real-world ransomware files.

Other than this, all anti-ransomware software will be tested with an equal opportunity. This is because the same malicious codes and malware packages will be presented against softwares in order to judge their percentage of success. Once you’ve determined the software that has the highest success percentage, you will know which software will work best for your small or medium-sized business.

Another factor that is judged as success in these simulators is with their ability to recover files in the affected computer. The best anti-ransomware software will be the one that ensures none of your data is lost and your system is completely restored.
