Ransomware is Evolving

May 26, 2018Simeon Georgiev

Ransomware attacks have temporarily declined in number. That was the revelation that an FBI report recently made claiming that the numbers of attacks in 2018 up until now are significantly less than the attacks that took place in 2017.

This was followed by some form of relief as many government agencies, domestic users and businesses believed that the worse might be over considering this recent decline in ransomware. As there are still no ransomware removal tools, this meant that for the time being, the threats related to it had been curtailed.

But now it has emerged that this decline in number of ransomware attacks in a temporary blip in a process of continuous evolution as well as the hackers working to improve the current codes of the lethal ransomware like BadRabbit and WannaCry. And while they’ve been doing so, no plausible progress has made on how to remove ransomware.

What’s even more disturbing is that the new ways that ransomware are evolving involve more than just stealing data or holding important information hostage. This new wave of improved ransomware will probably be a mix of cryptojacking and cryptomining. What this means is that the new ransomware will not only encrypt the information on your PCs but they’ll also simultaneously turn your PCs into cryptomining zombies.

This would mean that any ransomware removal tools in development would require the capability to ensure that these cryptojacking malwares are removed as well. This could also mean that the hackers responsible for ransomware in the first place have realized that there’s a lot more money to be made if they can somehow harness the ability of the processor to mine crypto currency.

While many users feel that re-installing the operating system is a trustable technique to remove ransomware, it has been observed that many cryptojacking malwares can remain intact on a computer even after a complete and thorough operating system re-installation has been carried out. As you can probably imagine, ransomware removal tools will prove utterly incapable of handling or removing this threat.

The best thing to do is to avoid visiting any suspicious or malicious web pages and keeping all your data properly backed up.
