How Can You Protect and Make Your Wi-Fi Secure?

August 9, 2019Simeon Georgiev

Wi-Fi’s are our gateway into the digital universe. They give us access and enable us to enter this world by connecting us to the internet, which then connects us to every corner of the world. As Wi-Fi is a wireless connection, this means that it is much easier to intrude into than wired settings. It is the only way that a hacker can access all your information without setting foot in your building and being miles and miles away from you.

When hackers get access to such information which they retrieve through your compromised Wi-Fi, they can use it for many purposes. For instance, they can use it for identity theft, cyberstalking, fraudulent activities, and worst of all, ransomware. Ransomware is when malware or malicious software is introduced within a device, and the data or assets within it are frozen. They can only be released through a code or pin that is given in return of a ransom by the hackers. This ransom can be physical or monetary too. If such an incident takes place, then you need to contact cybersecurity services which will use processes such as ransomware removal and ransomware recovery. This will rid your device of the malware and recover your data. However, this costs a lot of money, time, and effort. To save yourself from all this, it is best that you use the following tips to protect and keep your Wi-Fi secure.

Way to protect and keep your Wi-Fi secure:

Using stronger encryption

Some Wi-Fi access points offer the Wired Equivalent Privacy or also known as WEP as a standard of protection. However, many believe that this is now fundamentally broken and will not be able to give you the protection you need for your Wi-Fi. It is best to check and make sure your Wi-Fi is protected by WPA or WPA 2 as this is a much better and secure form of encryption that will protect your data from intruders.

Use a secure password

Make sure to use a secure and long password that a hacker is unable to break or crack. Usually, people use passwords and login credentials given on the box. However, this is risky as the hacker can easily get access to that and break into your computer. It is essential that you change the password and use a password that keeps your data secure.

Eliminate Rogue Wi-Fi Access Points

At times, in some places in the house or office, the internet connection or Wi-Fi signal is not strong enough, so we add a router to increase the signal for our convenience. This is the most significant entry point for hackers and gives them easy access to your data. It is best to eliminate such access points or if not, then keep them under surveillance.

Give Guests Their Own Network

In company settings, it is very prevalent that when guests come over, they make use of the Wi-Fi. This gives way to risk, and not every guest can be trusted. This is why it is essential that you give guests a separate network to protect your data.
