What Marshall University Research Tells Us About the Recent Ransomware Spree in Healthcare Industry

August 6, 2018Simeon Georgiev

Marshall University, based in Virginia, has released a report on ransomware removal. The report focuses on the rising cyber-risks that have been associated with the healthcare industry as the list of hospitals and medical facilities affected is increasing day-by-day. The report also consists of the contingency plans that will be required by institutions and businesses in the event of a ransomware breaching their cyber defenses.

Report’s Findings

The report emphasizes that through proper cybersecurity education as well as following a safe and secure digital lifestyle, organizations can decrease the possibility of a ransomware attack by a considerable margin while the report also signified the relief that it will give to the reputation, financials and operations of an institution.

The cybersecurity and ransomware removal experts were led by Nikki Spence. Ms. Nikki is an MS graduate from the health informatics department at Marshall University. She published details of more than 70 sources. These sources have been collected from the information of 12 years, which stretch from 2005 to 2017.

Ms. Nikki believes that cybercriminals have been targeting healthcare institutions due to a number of reasons. She stated that while hospitals have been trying to integrate modern IT technologies and trends, they have not been as advanced in strengthening their IT staff and thus have been negligent about their cybersecurity.

The IT technologies’ advancement came when hospitals employed the use of electronic health records (EHR) for faster diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients.

Ransomware removal professionals have cautioned that these recent attacks have now exposed the weak security of hospitals to the entire world. This means that now cybercriminals will be peeking and finding chinks in the armor of healthcare institutions more frequently. Therefore, hospitals can expect their systems to be ravaged in near future.
