LockerGoga: A New Form of Ransomware

May 4, 2019Simeon Georgiev

There’s absolutely no doubt in the fact that the internet has given us everything we wanted to make our lives easier and more exciting. From entertainment to information, we now have it all on our fingertips and well that’s great, but on the other hand, there’s another reality that the hijackers and other shady individuals out there are waiting every single moment to make an attack on someone’s security and disrupt their systems. Yes, you read that right and well, right now one of the biggest threats lurking around on the internet is Ransomware.

For those who don’t know, in a ransomware attack your computer gets locked and it becomes totally useless for you until you pay some ransom and get it unlocked again. This is quite common nowadays which is why it’s recommended that the next time you open a website on your PC, you should make sure that it has no malicious scripts on it because that’s where all the problem begins.

LockerGoga and What You Need To Know About It?

LockerGoga is a new type of Ransomware that affects the industrial systems out there. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the variants of LockerGoga are way more dangerous than any other kind of ransomware. This malware was recently detected when it attacked the whole system of a Norwegian aluminum manufacturing company called “Norsk Hydro”. This company needs no introduction, especially if you belong to the industrial field.

What actually happened was that the professionals at Norsk Hydro were locked out of their systems and they weren’t able to connect to their production systems which was a real threat to their business. Temporary stoppage was also observed in many of its plants and well some unknown production system changes were also made.

What Happens in A LockerGoga Attack?

Now, it is very obvious that you’d want to know what happens when someone falls victim to this attack. Well, for starters, what people have observed is that when LockerGoga infects a system, it actually changes the accounts, infects them with malicious content and it even changes the passwords of the systems. In some cases, all the users get logged off and their passwords and systems are all modified. These accounts are relocated into a temp file and then it’s renamed with the help of cmd also known as command line.

Overall Verdict

LockerGoga a type of Ransomware which clearly indicates that it’s used for getting some ransom and well, the ransom demanded is sometimes quite dangerous too. So, if you are someone who works in the industrial field and if you really care about your business and your systems and all the plants, then make sure to protect yourself from such malware. LockerGoga can do some serious harm to your systems so opt for browser extensions or use some real time authentic ad blockers and protect yourself as soon as possible.
