Ransomware attacks have not limited their threat to only desktops and mobile phones. As vehicles have gone through a lot of advancements, they have also become connected to the internet. This has made it possible for ransomware to attack vehicles too. It is one of the most dangerous cyber attack in the security domain because when a vehicle is attacked with a ransomware, the attacker locks and stops the operation of the car completely, making the passengers effective hostages. Thus, people pay in order to remove ransomware as soon as possible.
A research by KPMG on vehicles stated that more than 80 percent of automotive officials from automotive industry believe that their organizations would be strengthened through cyber security measures in the next three years.
Moreover, a study of Irdeto Global Connected Car Survey illustrated customer’s worries regarding the security features of smart cars and how it prevented them from buying it. More than 80 percent of the customers believed that a smart car is a potential target of a malware attack.
eCyber
Israeli automotive company ERM has introduced an anti-ransomware solution through its new security feature. The solution named as eCyber is expected to save vehicle systems from ransomware and other malware threats. The solution is expected to be globally available to ERM’s partners by the end of 2018.
eCyber is both a hardware and software solution. eCyber can be instated in vehicles in the process of fleet management and import. It is instated in several stages of a vehicle including post-factory period, aftermarket period and manufacturing period.
Furthermore, it is instated in the middle of a vehicle’s Controller Area Network Bus and external communications device. eCyber can be seen a secure passage through which CAN Bus can be communicated easily. It is made possible by unique values that are set up by the eCyber creators. This helps it to stop any unfamiliar means of communications heading into or outside the CAN Bus. This ensures ransomware removal as no ransomware can attack the vehicle.
It is expected that the arrival of eCyber can decrease the number of ransomware removal cases in vehicles.
