Google Chrome 65 Releases with New APIs, 45 Security Fixes and Tab-Under Blocking

March 9, 2018Simeon Georgiev

Just recently Google announced the launch of its newest version in the Chrome series, Google Chrome 65. The newest version for the browser comes with 45 security fixes, blocking of redirects from under-tabs and new APIs.

The new version number for Chrome is now 65.0.3325.146. Current users of Chrome can make use of the built-in features of the browser to update to the new version, while other interested users can download clean versions of the browser through Chrome’s main page.

Chrome Blocks Tab-Under Redirects

Out of all the features that we see with this new version of Chrome, the most exciting and important one has to be the feature to block tab-under redirects. This security feature will boost security within Chrome and users have already started heaping praise on social media for Chrome’s latest update to address this issue. Tab-under redirects basically occur when a web page on Chrome opens other links in newer tabs and redirects users from the old tab to the new URL. This can be extremely frustrating and users had previously voiced their opinions over how much time is wasted due to this lapse in security. Tab-unders are used by both regular advertisers as well by malvertisers. This is mainly because tab-unders bypass the built-in popup blocker within Chrome. However, with the latest Chrome edition, these tab-unders will no more be a threat to users.

New APIs

Moreover, besides just a new security system for tab-unders, Google has also added new APIs to Chrome. The first of these new APIs added to the list includes the CSS Paint API; this is an API that gives developers the luxury to generate images inside CSS code via JavaScript. This API has generated quite a lot of controversy, as developers argue that similar results could have been garnered via SVG images. They also argue that this would add an extra layer of difficulty to the process.

Moreover, there is also a new tool for programmers, known as the Server Timing API. This adds a new weapon to a programmer’s arsenal when they are assessing website performance.
