What to Do Against Ransomware

November 28, 2018Simeon Georgiev

The latest report on ransomware by Kaspersky Labs touched a number of important points. In light of these points, the following recommendations can assist you to protect the data of your organization:

  • Updates are necessary. Ensure that your systems install all the latest updates. Updates are not limited to OS updates. There are software updates too. These updates regularly address and provide security fixes to different vulnerabilities which prove extremely helpful in ransomware removal.
  • Likewise, add a good cybersecurity platform which can make good use of updated databases. Make sure that your cybersecurity platform carries components that focus on specific points from where ransomware cannot find an opening to the inside of your network. For this, do contact a quality cybersecurity firm like MonsterCloud.
  • If despite all your security measures, a ransomware strain still manages to corrupt your systems and lock your files, do not pay heed to the ransom demands of hackers for ransomware removal. This is necessary because a payout encourages them to not only attack others (and even attack your business again) but more than often they do not deliver on their promises.
  • Backups can serve as excellent allies in times of adversity. Regular backups make sure that your data is always available, even if a ransomware manages to lock it. However, backup approach should be multi-pronged; store them on physical devices as well as on the cloud. Backups on different channel make way for enhanced reliability.
  • Provide training to the teams of all of your departments. Help them learn the common distribution strategies of ransomware like how they infect (e.g. phishing, click-bait) and educate them to adopt a safer use of internet and computers.
  • Try to demarcate data, especially sensitive data and ensure that it is backed by stronger security solutions. To do this, setup access control so only the relevant parties have access to data.
