The recent survey by Datto Global raised some thought-provoking concerns for business owners. The report revealed the losing edge of several anti-virus solutions that were considered as reliable ransomware removal measures in the past. Some of these are:
Ineffective Anti-virus Solution
The presence of anti-virus and ransomware removal solutions gives many business owners a false sense of satisfaction. They believe that these tools are powerful enough to repel any attack. Such ineffective tools are not restricted to traditional anti-virus solutions but there also specialized solutions that focus on certain attack vectors of ransomware.
For example, spam email campaigns are a recurrent theme of ransomware attacks where cybercriminals forward malicious attachments and hyperlinks to their potential victims. As often employees are tricked into interacting with these links, either by clicking on it or download it; the ransomware enters in the computer and thus initiates its list of nefarious activities.
However, going by Datto’s report, these solutions are no up to the task. Amongst the interviewed officials from MSPs, 85% stated the fact that their clients had an anti-virus solution installed in their systems to combat these threats. 65% of their clients had solutions to filter spam email campaigns. While almost a one-third (33%) of the victims even used pop-up blockers as a ransomware removal strategy.
Apple OS’ in the Radars of Cybercriminals
Apple’s devices have always received praise from the IT industry for their enhanced security, particularly in comparison to Windows-based OS. On desktops and laptops, Apple users use MacOS while iOS is the default OS for iPhone and iPad users. The powerful combination of these devices offers a greater degree of productivity to businesses where despite their pricey costs; they were in demand due to their famed impenetrable security.
Unfortunately, if you also own an Apple device, then Datto’s survey brings out a bad news for you. The report explains that there has been a 5 times increase of victims operating on the back of Apple’s ecosystem in the last year.
