Ambiguity Surrounds Ransomware Payments

May 29, 2018Simeon Georgiev

A digital security firm has recently conducted a survey on different aspects of cybersecurity. It concludes many interesting findings on how different cyber threats are considered by the IT professionals. According to one such finding, ransomware attacks have become the top concern of IT professionals rendering their services to healthcare companies.

Lack of Information on Ransom Payments

The survey has provided an alarming finding on the dealing of cryptographic attacks by the companies. Only 10 percent paid extortion money for ransomware removal whereas nearly 50 percent didn’t know how their higher-ups negotiated with ransomware assaults. It is an important point to ponder. IT officials not knowing how their respective organizations have dealt with a malware activity sounds quite bizarre. It indicates that many organizations are trying to cover their ransomware infections. There could be two possible reasons for that.

To Save their Reputation

No one wants to be in headlines for all wrong reasons. For companies, this matter gravely because getting media coverage as the victim of ransomware is an outright awful thing for their goodwill and reputation. Clients become hesitant in doing business with organizations that have vulnerable cyber defenses and mass media coverage of a ransomware attack is not just bad for intrinsic reasons. It eventually translates into monetary losses due to increased customer attrition.

To Avoid Law Enforcement Interventions

If a company has already paid extortion money for ransomware removal, then they might have to face a probe from law enforcement agencies. Organizations don’t want to indulge in such lengthy processes. Therefore, they take a route of ambiguity regarding ransom payment for ransomware removal.

Privacy Concerns Regarding Cloud Backups

Like anyone else, IT professionals are also concerned with the privacy of data in cloud backups. In the survey, 44 percent participants showed their concern about the privacy and confidentiality provided by cloud storage. It should be remembered that cloud storage is an important deterrent against ransomware attacks.

Moreover, 80 percent responders think that their organizations are facing the shortage of experienced digital security professionals. This is one of the reasons why affected companies have to rely on outsourced ransomware removal measures.
