Kwik Fit Hit by Malware

February 8, 2019Simeon Georgiev

They’re Shy in Admitting They Needed Ransomware Removal

The very first time Kwik Fit had let it slip that they had a problem on their hands was when they confessed this to ‘El Reg.’ At first, they had believed the problem to be an unspecified IT network failure or even a virus, which is what they included in their initial confession. Later, BBC swooped in with the complete details of the company’s first malware attack.

Reassuring Customers

When Kwik Fit had found the problem to be virus-related, they knew their systems had been affected by malware. However, the management refused to disclose details due to the ongoing process of ransomware removal. They did, however, reassure their customers that among the data that was compromised – there was no financial or personal information of their customers. This is where they said they had no reason to believe that any data of their respective customers was compromised.

All of this was done in order to deal with the public outcry, which was mostly associated with angry tweets from customers and missed appointments.

Definitely a Ransomware Attack

Kwik Fit has yet to confirm what BBC has already announced. With all the present facts and symptoms of the event, it smells more like ransomware than ever before. In response to a particular customer’s tweet about changing their accounts’ password, this is what Kwik Fit had to say:

“Hi Andy, currently our systems are down so you won’t receive the reset password link yet. We would recommend waiting to reset this for when our servers are back up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

It seems clear that they are fending off any negative PR and are still dealing with the information. Well, they’re off to a bad start because their customer base is already agitated enough to switch to competitors.

All we can do is wait around and hope Kwik Fit owns up soon enough.
