The CEO of Quora – Adam D’ Angelo has quite recently posted an update for users which enlightened them about a ransomware attack they experienced quite recently. He started the post by acknowledging the unauthorized access of a malicious third party and that they were in the process of taking steps for ransomware removal.
Apart for preparing for future instances of ransomware removal, he went on to say that they will be completely transparent about what has been compromised. This information was found by their internal ransomware removal teams with the help of digital forensics.
Even though the investigation was still in due process then, Adam D’ Angelo said that the email addresses, account names and encrypted passwords are now compromised of their 100 million users. Even if this doesn’t sound like too much harm because all of this content was already public – like upvotes, comments, answers and question – one thing may mostly concern these people.
The data that was imported onto Quora from other social networks was also compromised. This, as you can imagine, is a bigger problem and would need to be addressed promptly. Quora has gone ahead to notify all the users that have been compromised while also invalidating all the passwords of people who may have even gotten close to being affected.
The CEO continued in the blog post to say that their internal teams have also synergized with external ransomware removal teams to gain a complete understanding of what loopholes in their system caused this breach. While the investigation is in due process, they have advised users to stop using the same passwords across multiple platforms.
Finally, the CEO spoke for the company and went on to take responsibility for what has occurred and promised to work to gain the trust of their users. Well even if we believe him, we know that ransomware has evolved beyond all imaginations and no one seems safe now. Even the most gargantuan of companies seem to fall prey to the cunning of these predators!
