The Financial Industry’s Ransomware Removal Technique

June 1, 2018Simeon Georgiev

It has been a problem that has plagued several financial institutions for the past 5-6 years. Ransomware has gotten even more lethal and chaotic with every passing moment. It has caused both the public and the corporations enormous losses which are expected to gradually increase considering how ransomware continues to adapt and improvise against everything that has been tried against it.

There’s still no potent ransomware removal tool, this means that if a corporation has their servers infected and data encrypted, they have no way to remove ransomware. However, certain developments have come forward which may potentially allow corporations to come up with a proper ransomware removal strategy.

It’s called “Hands On’ and it’s a Cyber Range Exercise that is meant to create firewall around the corporations’ main server and protect its files while ensuring that no ransomware can breach through it. Rather than being software designed to remove ransomware, this new approach is attempting to curb the ransomware from even entering the corporations’ server.

The defensive strategy was designed by ManTech and is one of the first attempts that take a new approach to ransomware removal. There were 22 cyber security personnel and experts who were present at a seminar organized by the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center. This strategy won’t remove ransomware, but will definitely make it next to impossible for any bugs, scripts or extensions that have been known to have ransomware connected to it.

According to a statement made by ManTech, the strategy was first developed for the US Department of Defense in order to allow them to have a potent protective action plan against a cyber attack. It only took some upgrades and script revisions to make them ready for consumer usage.

ManTech kept emphasizing it during the presentation that it is a bit too early to know how successful will this strategy be as a ransomware removal technique but they’re positive that it will yield relatively positive results. They also maintained that the tool is not designed to primarily remove ransomware but to only to ensure that nothing like ransomware could enter a corporation’s servers.
